Right guys and girls.

I dont know much about bikes. But my work are doing a cycle scheme - works out much cheaper than buying one out right...

Although I can't decicde out of the following... Which is the best for general bike riding along roads etc?

The middle link doesn't work but neither of the other two are particularly appropriate for roads. If its mainly roads you are on you will want thinner tyres, having fat tyres like those bikes is a pain in the arse on the road.

I jsut got myself a bike though cycle scheme. Went with a Cube Curve, which is a hybrid bike. Much nicer for roads but also got the ability to go down tow paths etc if you want

can you get down to a shop and sit on them? the second link didn't take me anywhere so i can only see 2 bikes. is it you that has chosen them 2 or does it have to be a choice between those? if you are mainly on roads and it's just a commuter then id go for a hybrid http://www.cyclehouse.net/products.php?plid=m1b0s18p996&z=1276 something like that.

Work out how often you will be going 'off road' I had a Specialized Hardrock which had pretty fat tyres which I got with the intention of doing some 'off road' rides but never got around to it. I then got myself the cube bike which has much thiner tyres and its so much nicer to ride for the 90% of the time which is on roads. I think if you are mainly on roads and got one of those bikes above you would regret it. However if you are going to spend more time up and down bike tracks then go for one of those

If most of your cycling is on road. IE commuting etc - dont buy a mountain bike as they are too much effort to use for a commuter. Get something called a hybrid, which is basically an urban bike, mountain bike frame but with more comfortable riding position and road orientated wheels and tires, however they still retain thick tires, suspension and double walled rims so take a good beating.

Look at the offerings from giant and specialised.

I'd 2nd that about not getting a mountain bike if its only going to be used on the road.

A hybrid with suspension is your best bet so you still get a comfy ride. Something like this

or this if you want something cheaper

Evans are trying to get hold of a Specialized Allez Sport for me through my companies bike to work scheme. I want a racer as my commute would be around 17 miles each way.

Also worth noting you can usually get stuff like a helmet, lights, panniers, security locks, puncture repair kits, pumps etc. through the scheme.

For that kind of money ide be looking at something along the lines of a specialized or a marin, the new specialized hardrocks come with a much more allround tyre than previous years they now have the same tyres as the rockhopper and its much more suited for road use.

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/hardrock-pro-disc-2009-mountain-bike-ec016014?query=hardrock

If youve got your heart set on one of the above bikes ide say either the first or the last, due to the first having deore gear components as these are a catagory above the the components on the other 2 but the third one has "better" brakes.

I know some people will think its stupid spending alot of money on bikes but the more you spend the more bike you really do get so its best to spend as much as your budget will alow on the bike it wil make a big difference. Also make sure you test the bike before you ride it as all bikes have different frame geometry so u may find some uncommfortable to ride.

The new 2010 trek 1.2 is out this week £675 for the top spec one (bargain )

As all these people said, go for a hybrid bike, something with 700c wheels.

Specilaized Crosstrails are completely sold out with specialized, so unless the shop has one, you cant get one

Also, marin is selling out pretty quick too!

I'm well pissed off with this bike scheme thing, I actually work for the NHS in the Public Health department, yet I keep banging on about this scheme and it is just going nowhere. I think it is a joke,m promoting walking and cycling but can't even give their staff a helping hand. I even found a recently published journal on the British Medical Journal site spelling out the pro's of it all and gave that to them.

I've got my eye on a mountain bike now on ebay, although i'll be mainly commuiting it is only 4 miles so don't mind it being a bit harder.
