I cheated and used the rear wiper wiring to power my boot popper. Saves running lots of wires.

How's it not a good idea? What can go wrong? I think you misunderstand me, I used the wiper wiring not the stalk. My stalk is out of a Cav saloon so it doesn't push back anymore. The wiper wire is cut off the multi plug and wired to a switch.
Like so.

The solenoid runs both ways so if you power it the opposite way my solenoid pushes instead of pulls.
Mine is earthed to the earth point in the boot and the power comes from the wiper motor wiring. It's not need anymore, It saves running extra wires that aren't needed.

I've had no porblems whatsoever with mine.
The only downside is the wiper wire is run via a timed relay, So the power is 4-5 seconds delayed after the first time you use it. No big issue but I am going to bypass the relay when i get time.
