So is it the EML light on the dash that flashes to give you the codes?
Can you only read codes that are stored when the light is on in the first place? Becasue I'm wanting to do it but my EML light's always going on and off.

yeah the EML light on the dash flashes.
No your EML light doesnt have to be on to read codes, mine didnt come on but decided i would do the test anyway and it came up with 2 codes.
Your EML light will be on anyway when you ignition is live, it would usually go off when you start the car.
