Need to get a bike rack to make transporting the bikes easier. In the ideal world I'd love a Thule tow bar mounted one, but for over £250 all in (including tow bar & electrics fitted) it'll be worth more than my car.

So I'm going down the bike rack root. Ever since dad had one that used fabric straps and it slipped on the boot denting it, I've never liked them. I notice Thule did one which uses metal straps & clamps, but that is very pricey.

Then I noticed Halfords do one and I might be able to get away without a lightboard - it's this: Halfords Advanced Rear High mount 3 Cycle Carrier

Does anyone have one? It looks pretty good. Just wondered what peoples opinions etc are?!

That's the one my dad got, worked fine for the 250 mile trip down here. Lifted off the boot a bit at speed, but only thing that went wrong was when he accidentally used the rear wiper and it couldn't move

I don't think my car will be going quick enough for it to lift!

if its touching the paintwork it will scratch it and if its mounted on the glass I would have severe reservations about using it. have known them go through the back window after a while

On my next car, yes. Not this one though!

Imagine weight over the back of my car. . .it'll be sitting up and begging so much the front wheels will be spinning off the ground!

It was doing it about 60mph+ There's a bit that rests on the glass but it has spongy things on. This is on a Mondeo btw, last shape.

Really quite pricey when you factor in bars, clamps and mount.

Think I might go for that Halfords one!

Good to know.

I went to look at one today and was a bit put off by the teeth system on it where the arms meet the rest of the frame. Doesn't look particularly strong being plastic etc.

Yeah they still make them. They are meant to be the one to get if you have to get a boot/window mount. Bit more expensive but you pay for the best

It's quite strong I reckon mate, there's loads of teeth and the chances of them all breaking would be quite slim. They're quite chunky too. Annoying trying to keep the two parts separate when you're setting it up, I found

sounds exactly like mine, carried 3 bikes on it before with no problem at all but yeah they are annoying when setting up and trying to keep the teeth seperate from each other

I suppose they couldn't make and sell them if they'd keep failing. Luckily we ride proper quality bikes that way considerably less than the average shitter Halfords sells!

I bought thule aero bars, foot pack and astra fitting kit for £60, sold there fitting kit for £5 and bought a corsa fitting kit for £10. Was saving for carriers as they are £50 each second hand but lost my job. Used the roof bars to move so much stuff when i moved into my new house.
If i was you buy roof bars as you can use themfor so many things
