What is needed to fit a 1.6 16v engine into a 1.2 8v?

Got the chance for a complete engine that's still in the car everything is there and will be going to hear it running next week.

loom, ecu, ring round ignition, box, drive shafts, think an engine mount is possibly different but prob not a hard swap

Will it drop straight in?

I will be able to hear the car running but not drive it as it has got no rear brakes and no wheels.

Should i just look out for any noises like tapping and any smoking?

yeah it will drop straight in if you get all them parts.most x16xes are known for slightly tapping but thats not forever.if it smokes its worth changing the valve stem seals as thats another known cause on them engines to go wrong.

Ok mate champion.

Does the loom just plug straight in?

The car has only done about 50k and may have some service history with it.

yeah as far as im aware the internal loom off your 1.2 8v may be the same as the sport bar you may not have all the mods like electric window, mirrors and heated seat bits.if you wanted to go down the full route i would suggest fitting the internal loom if you can get hold of it to have them bits in your car

apart from that its pretty straight forward.

Not really fussed about all the electric mods ect as long as it will plug straight in and run fine is all im wanting.

Do use the radiator off the 1.6 or use my original one off my 1.2?

you should be ok then if they are both 1997's

I would suggest checking the internal loom plug when it comes to putting the engine in.if need be before you do it,try get your hands on the ecu to the 1.6 engine and see if the plugs fit correctly.

This is some info i u2u'd from a member on here.

aup ma8 i converted a 1.2 8v in 2 a 1.6gsi engine!

the looms in the car r the same but u lose the rev counter as the u have 2 use u old 1.2 wirein loom 4 the starter motor and alternator.
you use all ur old 1.2 mounts.
u can use ur same dirve shafts.
use the same raditator.
u need the transponder out of the key and the tranponder reader frm around the ignition barrle.
other then tht its an easy transplant.

If you have a rev-counter it will continue to work, if you dont have one it gets a bit fiddly.

the conversion looks a peace of piss to be fair, i converted my 1.2 16v x plate into a 2litre so the 16 sport swap into his shouldnt be a prob.

it all looks straight foward just wish we could start doing the converison now mark mate lol
