A friend of mine has just bought a bmw 318 is e36, it taps like mad but isnt the tappets, it is fine when it idles but as soon as it gets over 2k rpm it taps like hell, the dealer said it only did it when they replaced the exhaust, anybody got any ideas to what it may be.

How many miles has it done? My mates was quite tappy but the engine kept going until 170k before it died.

its on about 140k, the car runs sweet as a nut,has full service history etc.. but doesnt tap when idling it just taps when accelerating, like said the dealer said it has only done it since they fitted a new exhaust

Well surely if the dealer said it only started since THEY changed the exhuast surely they should be help responsible and liable to fix it.
