Patroling burgalry hotspots in the early hours of the morning trying door handles to see if they are locked, in a patrol of 3000 houses they found 66 to be unlocked.
If they come accross an unlocked door, they go in making it clear to the occupants that it is the police and that their door is unlocked, they are then offered free security advice by a PCSO the next day
Good or Bad idea? Discuss...

Horrific idea, whether or not someone locks their door is their business.

TBH they should just put a big sign outside telling people the door is unlocked and let them get broken into, will teach them not to be so stupid in the future.

Good imo, my parents house got robbed a few months ago and just an 32" LCD was taken. The 46" was locked to the table. They never bothered with any cash, hifi or anything else but it's was my parents fault for not locking the front door. We suspect it was either popped open or in through the letterbox and pulled the handle down with easily to buy locksmith/homemade tools.
For all the grief/updset it caused my mum I see it as a good thing. PVC doors are pretty weak if not locked correctly and everyone should look at getting anti-snap and bump cylinders asap. Some you tube vids are scarey.

In that case, I hope those who wish to leave them open will not be bothering with the police when they get burgled?

Of course they will but where does the line get drawn? Are they going to start checking car doors? garage doors? office doors?
The police force is stretched as it is and the nanny state is already over bearing to the point we're watched 24/7 by CCTV. I think it's a patronising and time wasting exercise personally.

Yeah they are over stretched, thats why this is a good idea. Im betting its a damn site less work trying the doors of these houses than it is even going to just 5 houses that have been broken into the next morning.

Oops, for some reason I assumed it was car door handles they were trying. Not homes.
Hmmm, thats a little bit different I suppose.
Still, it should give the occupant enough of a scare to think about locking the doors next time.
However, i can think of a few reasons you would intentionally leave a door unlocked, so it might be seen as a bit of a waste of time by some.

its also been said that being woke up at home by a police man at the door in the early hours is over kill and such measures should be left to when something more serious has occured
I wouldnt mind it like, I think its a good idea

A house in my street got broken into not long back, they used a garden spade to take the patio door out prising it from the bottom.since then we have had a letter asking us all to consider having stronger doors

that technique was used on one of those cop programs, think it was road wars or cops with cameras.

I wouldn't be surprised if one gets clobbered around the head sooner or later from a startled house owner
