I've been trying to eat a bit healthier lately, buying my lunch from the salad buffet thing in sainsbury's.

Stuff is alright, just scoop a few things into a pot and pay a fairly low price.


Anyway, they have the nutritional values above each item in the buffet... There's this really nice Morroccan Cous Cous, I could eat a whole bowl of it.

I noticed today its 657 calories per 100g. WTF

Bearing in mind the small pots could easily hold 200-300g, that's 1300-1800 cals if you have a pot full of cous cous (which I've seen many people do!).

To put this in context to people who don't know how many cals in things there are:

You could have like 2 or 3 big mac meals at mcd's for that amount of cals...

or 11 packets of crisps!

or 3 or 4 wraps / sandwiches.

or 7 dairy milk chocolate bars.

Surely that can't be right? 1800 cals for a small pot of cous cous? why the hell even have it in the healthy section.

Shocking isnt it.. I used to be a FAT bastard weighing in at around 18stone.. One day I started paying attention to the crap I was eating and I lost over 5 stone in less than 5 months.

Unless it's got loads of sugar or something in it it'll be calories they've given instead of kcals, although that's stupid if they have.

Kcal and calories are the same thing.

Its Kj and calories that are different, approx 4.2kj per calorie.

yeah couscous is incredibly heavy in kcals approx 4 times more than boiled white rice

That must be what's confusing me, I was sure some labels had cals and kcals on them as well, obviously not.

A single calorie is a tiny tiny amount, so when people say calories they actually mean kilocalories, kcal.

Kilojules is the metric measure, and thats approx 4.2x a kilocalorie.

If so they're making their own stuff look more fatty/bad for you than it actually is. I would have thought they'd try to state the smallest amount possible so people are tempted, rather than wildly overestimate.

someone may of just copied the values off the side of the container that the cous cous (DRY) comes in.

Rather than cooking it, measuring 100g of cooked cous cous and then analysing the cals in it.

--- This imo, may be the answer, as 100g of DRY cous cous is like powder... will be light weight, so you could fill a bucket with 100g of the stuff

then you cook that 100g of dry, which absorbs lots of water and thus grows in size and weight.

Thus now, 100g of cooked cous cous is only a fraction of the original 100g of DRY cous cous.


So dry the lot may weigh 100g, but cooked it becomes say a total of 600g.

Thus... in reality, 100g of cooked cous cous would be the total cals 657 / 6 = 109 cals per 100g which seems a lot more likely.

everyone knows all the supermarket stuff is packed with shit to make it last longer which in turn makes it fatty.

tescos pasta and sandwiches have shit loads of salt and other stuff in. it's silly.

better off making your own things.

^ This is true, the only real way to eat healthily is when you make it yourself at home, as you know exactly what has gone in to it then, dont need to count calories either then

cheaper too

i have 2 peanut butter sandwiches for work which i make (no butter) in white bread and 2 apples and 2 bananas for an 8 hour shift.

probably costs no more than 80p for that. whereas you'd pay about 3 quid for that in supermarkets for 2 sandwiches and 4 pieces of fruit.

If its processed, pre cooked, comes in a box or wrapper 99% of the time its bad for you. If it makes claims on the front that its healthy or low in fat then chances are its bad for you too.

The only way to ensure your food is healthy and free from additives and shit is to eat fresh produce and make everything yourself. Of course this costs a lot more and isnt convenient, but thats the reaso that half our population is obese - lazy parents filling their kids and themselves with chips, crisps, bread and cakes etc.

Going by the packet of Cous Cous we have here, 50g of dry Cous Cous is 113g when cooked in boiling water.
100g dry Cous Cous = 365 calories, 50g cooked = 185 calories.
There's some serious calories in the sauce on it.

Cous cous, pasta, potatoes, rice. All have a lot of carbs an calories so not good to have lots if you're trying to loose a few pounds.
