Whats good out there at the moment for around £500?

Give Ian a U2U as I'm not sure he uses this part of the forum much, he has one doesn't he and he seems to know a fair bit about them

Take a look at some of the home cinema / reviews at AVForums, there's also a few in the for sale section (might have to register to see);

edit; http://www.avforums.com/forums/projectors/
I'm sure if you post the same question there you'll get a good answer

Craig - one of my customers has an AV business, I could give you his details and he may be able to sort you out a good deal if you tell him that I referred you? He's been in the business for over 20 years so he knows his shit, and will be able to advise you on what to go for etc.

I've got one but its not very good, want a newer one really. My only advice is make sure its quite and can be roof mounted.

Looking on AV Forums, Optoma GT7000 seems to be one of, if not the, most recommended, is about £450 too!
