Has anyone gone out and learnt a second language?
How did you go about doing it, Internet? Books? Audio Tapes (CD)?
How long did it take you to get semi decent?
How old when you started?
Ive heard that the older you are the harder it is to learn, im 23 btw

Think thats only when your really young. Iv heard the Rosetta stone program is quite good but never tried myself, its available in loads of languages and you can get hold of it from a few online "shops".

I've had to learn English, but many countries are really big on teaching it anyway so I had a basic knowledge already, think I actually started really early but I was maybe aged 4 or 5, so much so that when I'm in the house with my girlfriend (I live in UK) we speak English without thinking.
I am fluent in Spanish as I lived there too.
I have lived in Tokyo aswell and had lessons for Japanese but really struggled so just found that nodding and 'hmmming' and saying "AAAHHH" did the trick.

I started learning Spanish when I was 14, I'm now 24 and just completed a Single Honours degree in Spanish and won the departmental prize for getting the highest mark in the year Ive heard good things about Rosetta Stone, but to be honest the only way to learn a language is to practice all of the skills as much as you can.

and yes, living in the country is an amazing way of learning but you do need some knowledge before you go otherwise the learning curve is just too steep and people give up.

I'm currently doing AS level Spanish. Did the GCSE last year. Its evening classes so you need to put in extra work outside the class but its more structured than private study.

I speak a bit of French and Arabic, my mum speaks it too so I think it helped being around someone that spoke the languages on a regular basis.
Myself and my other half want to learn Spanish though. Considering evening classes as there's a place down the road from us where we could go.
