Is there any way of testing a lambda sensor?

I bought a universal one in July last year, from German and Swedish for £35. When I was having my Unichip fitted at Velos last week it was giving a high carbon monoxide reading at low revs. Rob and Alan said to get a new one from a Rover 800 which is around £120! As I'm skint at the minute, I took the one that was on the engine back to G/S, who charged me another £35, gave me a new one and sent the old one back for inspection. They said if it's faulty they will give me the £35 back! Seems a bit shite to me!!!
Anyway, I put the new one on, and it seems worse! It's all jerky, like before unichip, and ECU light comes on sooner!

Have I got to spend £120 on this Rover one? Any suggestions?

Yeah its a 1600, 3-wire.

The sensor is fine at 3500rpm plus, its at low revs its not responding quick enough. Joys of buying cheap crap I guess
