The thing is, I don't currently have a HD TV. So this weekend I shall be mostly be shopping for one.

I don't really know whats best. LCD or plasma? Whats the difference?
I think LED backlit tvs are out of the question as they're just too expensive for the minimal picture upgrade.

Ideally, I want a 40".

Who wants to recommend a good tv for me?

Sorry if this should be in geek day, but i didn't think TVs were really that geeky. After all, they are essential in the day to day lives of most people.

When I was looking a few months back for the parents the Panasonic Viera 42" with built in freesat looked a good deal and had good reviews. 5 year guarantee if you get it from John Lewis too

The one in the currys advert at the moment looks a good deal, 40" Sony 1080p for £499 when you trade in an old tv?

i saw this in the paper today, comes with 3 years warranty too. 40" LCD 1080p for that price is a VERY good deal.

sky hd doesnt put out at a true 1080 HD resolution which makes me laugh. 720p or 1080i is what it can run at. I doubt you will notice much of a difference. Panasonic id say, great detail in standard def aswel as high def, good tough panels, new panel features too. G10 series probably be suitable.

No-one broadcasts in full 1080p due to the extreme bandwidth it consumes.
Theres no facilities for anyone to transmit in that range yet.

As for your original post, it really depends on your budget, I recently bought a Pioneer Kuru for around £2.5k, which is still one of the best consumer TVs to date.

Pioneer or Panasonic without question are the TV's to go for (both made in same factories).
Not to say the other brands are bad, but these two are renown for the best.

I would personally go for Plasma too, A modern plasma will show better colours than LCD's.

This isnt really the best place to ask, I would head over to AV-Forums and speak with people there.

Get Plasma end of.

Dont worry about room temp or room brightness, just get a Plasma.

Get a Pioneer or Panni and be rest assured, you get what you pay for

That's good advice, IF you want to get one before they stop making them totally.
