My GF has a 307 1.6 HDi and that's brilliantly economical. 57mpg average on the trip computer and she uses the AC a bit. It's quicker than you'd expect, it's comfortable to drive etc.
Other than that, the company I used to work for used the Astra, Focus and Golf TDis, which were all good on fuel. The Golf I had would do 45mpg at 85mph with the AC on.

My 1.6 petrol 307 has been very reliable and not bad on fuel. Does 40MPG on average and with the AC on and keep withing the banning threashold That's motorway and country road driving.

She hates punto's with a passions so they are out of the question unfortunately.
Its mostly motorway miles she does so dont know ow the smaller engined desiels would do.

At least the French 1.6HDi then, as said the 1.7CDTi Astra, 130PD Golf (Colin), anything with a 1.9TD engine would do nicely, they shift, and are built to be repmobiles so come with decent kit usually.
My preference would be the 1.9CDTi Astra (red Ti = 150bhp remappable up to 200)

My 1.6 does absolutly fine on the motorway.
The 1.3 also has 6 gears so the rvs would be low!
