Also--- im gonna be cycling to work on this bike at least 2-3 times a week.... which is around a 22 mile round trip...all on roads. My original gt tyres were very knobbly for off road use mainly I would say.

Has anyone got any recommendations on good road tyres.....these seem to be popular and get decent reviews http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_215298_langId_-1_categoryId_228357#tab3

Also is there and advantage in different types of wheels for off road or on road use- I would assume the more you pay for a wheel the stronger and lighter it gets?

Just get it straightened. Someone decent will be able to do it. Whats the bend like? Short and sharp or a long wobble? If its the later it will be easy to fix.

£6-£8 for a wheel true in the shop i work in, a "decent" wheel would be around £50-60 and a tyre between £15 and £40
