Max budget of £500 for a beginner slr

I've been looking at the Lumix G1, although it says it's not a proper SLR, would the picture quality and end-results be the same?

If not, the 450d, 1000d or Nikon d3000

Any opinions are greatly received.

I can only comment on the 1000d as thats what i have and iv never used nikons, but based on my camera go for the 450d out of those 2 canons, or possibly the 500d if you could stretch to it.

best advice is go in and handle the cameras as one may feel better for you than the other.

as for picture quality, eventually a dslr will beat it especially once you start upgrading the glass, but for starters you can still get pretty could results off non slr cameras imo.

well apparently you can get different lenses for the lumix g1, from what i can gather, the only difference is the viewfinder, not really too sure

best bet is go into a shop and try then all out really and see which one you feel comfortable with.

depends what you aim to get from your pictures really, if its just for general use then the lumix will probably be good for what you want, but if you want to take it further then that may restrict you with the choice of lenses.

Same as I say for everyone.

Go to Jessops and find which manufacturer you prefer. Then get yourself on ebay and find a decent second hand example.

The lenses are far more important which is why I wouldn't go for anything other than Canon or Nikon. Spend as much as you can on decent glass, the body doesn't matter too much.

id go nikon mate.

Ive been using nikons for about 3 years now (D50, D80, D200) for work and university and i prefer them.

Reasons are...

More Ergonomic
Better Colours (in my opinion)
Build Quality
Great to learn on

Whats better about using flash on the nikons Adam? Im using a canon 450d just, going to upgrade in the new year though so might have a look at Nikons aswell as canon.

Nema im using a canon 450d, excellant camera for the price tag. Perfect for learning on.

The canon system is really over complicated for what it is when using multiple speedlights, the Nikon works in stops, which just seems like comon sense to me and i found it much more user friendly.

Thanks very much guys!

Also, been looking at the 500d and the d5000 as they have video; just trying to work out whether it's worth the extra cash.
