if i thought i could take the robber, i'd have a go with a bat or something. If he looked solid, i'd throw my girlfriend in front of him, hope she got raped or something, while i make an escape.

This might sound strange...
In the car, I have the wheel brace under the passenger seat. In the house I have a 12" Bowie knife stashed in the couch. Rounders bat under my corner of the mattress, and a C02 gun already chambered with 8 pointed pellets in my sock drawer. Funnily enough I have a knuckleduster in my garage at the moment along with a jagged 5" retractable blade too.
I sold the cross-bow I had as I thought it was crap. I also sold my machetes as they were just too big and goofy for my liking.
I really fancy an M11 airsoft with blowback, just for kicks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BRCbzN3QLo

Ideally it needs to be something that you 'might have laying about' and cant be construde as a offencive weapon so that when you end up in court because you battered shit out of someone you can say you reached for the nearest object..
Something like a vacuum cleaner tube, a broom handle or one of those poles with a hook on for opening loft hatches are pefect things to keep by the side of your bed.
