Got a promotion at work at about a month or so ago ( ) and now oversee a team of 8 people in my department. In our department we have 5 teams of 8 or so folk which all come under one blanket. Each team has a line manager, of which I am now.

When I was in the team at X-Mas we used to get a present from our line manager. Nothing major, normally a voucher or a bottle of wine/few beers. Now, I always presumed that the money for them came from the company but i've just found out the line manager always used to buy them.

Now, without meaning to sound like a tight bastard I dont see why I should have to fork out from my own pocket to buy staff a gift at X-Mas. Due to the current wage structure i'm not earning a massive amout more than I was until August 2010, and I cant really be affording to spend £50 odd this close to Christmas for gifts.

Am I just being a scrouge, or would you feel the same way

Its the decision you make, your old manager obviously did it to give themselves an easier life at work by keeping you lot happy.

If you think you can get away with not buying them shit then do so.

Personally Id just spend £20 on a load of food/sweets and let them chow down on it at work.

Exactly. I dont like spending money I dont have to.

They are all women on my team so might just see if there is ny deals on wine be had, 3 for £10 or summat then give um all a bottle.
