Donner was fired whilst filming it, I and II were filmed simultaneously. His replacement re shot most of the scenes, removed Marlon Brando's 17 minutes on screen and added loads of camp comedy scenes. After a bootleg version pieced together by a fan was released on the web Warner threatened legal action then agreed for Donner to re edit the film with his original footage. This version contains 83% of original Donner footage that wasn't in the theatrical release.
Some of the crew left when Donner was fired and so did composer John Williams.
Just been searching and Amazon have a 3 disc set of original and Donner Cut for £4.97.
Sounds like it could be good, watched the original the other day and its not bad, sequels were terrible.
