will something like this do for checking whether my car battery is charging properly?

yes it will. you see where the dial is in the pic? well turn it to the right and stop on '20'.

Bettery should get 12V at rest and 13-13.7v charging from alternator. It wont tell you if your battery is knackered though. If a cell is down, it will still read 12v at rest and 13-13.7v charging but you need a different meter to check that and they arent cheap. It tells you whether the drain is too great to acheive the cranking amps required to turn the lump...

thanks everyone

tiger i just need to check the alternator i working really. so if the battery is getting the correct charge and its not starting then i'll replace the battery

Sound, I get 13.7vdc on mine with engine running. Oh yeah, another thing. If your battery light stays on when the car is running, that means your alternator is not charging battery

seen a chest on the machine mart site for £105 so might get that as i looks like my brothers top box will fit on it

halfords are doing a 6 drawrer one on offer at the min, get the top box and the bottom bit on wheels for £50
