Clapton, without a doubt.

Jimmy Paige is also superb, played the solo for Stairway to Heaven with a violin bow and his guitar once.

Hendrix reigns supreme - his influence has been present in modern music ever since his untimely death

hendrix was a freat guitar player some of the sounds he got out of his guitar were amazing, but the likes of carlos santana have been playing since the time of woodstock and produce phenominal albums time and time again. carlos santana is massively under rated!

Slash was pretty good! Good to seem some other closet GNR fans here....

Randy Rhoads (guitarist with Ozzy until 1982ish) was pretty amazing.

hendrix and clapton r both gud. both revolutionised guitar playing and blues music.

slash is class, but more emphasis is put on speed instead of technique and feel

Another under-rated guitarist is Ben Harper. His slide playing is damn good.

Some guitarists are technically very good, just don't make good music... depends what you're into.

Like Pete Townshend.

For all that the Who are a good band, he's helluva overrated.
