Looking to buy one, does anyone know of any common faults or bad points about them?
I know the turbo's only last to about 50,000 miles or so
anything would be great
cheers

As Liam said, Turbo's only last around 40k iirc??? Cambelt again at 40k. Check front bumpers genuine too, not fibreglass.

if you dont look after it, then a turbo wont last. a car thats had a turbo changed at 40k really hasnt been looked after at all.

I'm on the standard turbo at 65k. Oil changed every 6k from new and my turbo is perfect I've seen z20let's on 95k with the standard turbo so I honestly believe it's how well you look after them.

Mine never needed a new turbo and it was tuned. Always warmed up and down etc...

You will need to budget for a super loud stereo to keep you awake driving it though

The most un-involving drive ever. Steering is absolutely minging due to the EPAS.

Handling is shite.

Looks pretty and relatively cheap to tune.

Mine was phase 3.5 and still bored the pants off me though.

If you buy one make sure you buy a fault code reader as well.

Drive one but IMO boring and lack any involvement and are generally thristy.

I would say they look good but after owning one I would say its an aquired taste.

My turbos done over 60k now and still pulls fine, no smoke either. Handles just as good as my old corsa did and that had a bilstein b10 kit on it and rear roll bar

I hate this when people say it handles crap...... maybe it does but it also depends what you intend to do with it people buy citroen 2cv's not for handling but maybe for classic status, not saying the astra gsi is classic status but like i say as long as your not after a mitsubishi evo in the corners their a good solid car, my mk4 gsi is a great long distance tourer for me and my mrs as its built well and very comfortable, it cruises at 100mph very well indeed has all the toys and so far has been very reliable etc etc ITS NOT ALL ABOUT HANDLING ITS THE PACKAGE.

CLIO 182 is a much better handling car but ium pretty sure it would do your head in on a long distance tour, well the astra would'nt

my turbo is on 63k and the standard turbo is fine on mine still.... all ive changed is the afm in 24k miles

lets put it this way its worlds better than my xe corsa when it comes to driver involvement lol your fooled into thinkin a xe corsa is better due to performance/noise etc

Yes

TBH, i been all around europe in one, around the ring etc, and for the money, i couldnt think of an allround better car. Comfy, spacious, and would do 150 mph without being too tedious.
