i've put my battery in the boot and earthed it, but not sure how thick the power lead will need to be going through the car back into the engine bay. would this be ok???

i would say u need thicker stuff than both of them. ive heard people using 0 gauge wire, like u use would to power an amp

i got some 0 gauge stuff, but its too big to tuck under all the plastics

i used 0 gauge from front ot rear on my last corsa and it fitted no problem also used it on a few amp kits, i used to just buy it by the metre from maplins
