Why would it make any team struggle more? If anything it will make it easier for teams and they could finish 7th and still get in it.

I cant make my mind up. In one way I think it could be good as will give a bit more action at the end of the season, but then I think it could be very unfair if the 4th place team finishes with a load more points than 7th place (as has happened in the past a lot, even over 5th place) yet dont end up getting in the CL.

Especially teams that have freak seasons, like Ipswich, Reading, Birmingham etc....

The CL should be a representation of Englands best teams. So 1st - 4th makes sense.

Yeah, totally agree.

Plus when are these going to be played? A team in 4th could potentially have CL semi/final, FA Cup final and then these play offs all in the same few weeks.

And which game would they take more seriously? It'd devalue the FA Cup Final IMO.

Exactly.

Let me guess. This was the idea of a certain Mr Gartside? The same guy who said lets just close off promotion/relegation to/from the Premiership.

Anything as long as his beloved Bolton can get more money.

It will happen though lets be honest... if its bene proposed and is a serious idea then obviosuly 14 of the chairmen will agree as they all stand to win from it!

I agree there. Very harsh if a team finishing 4th a good few points over anyone else then had to go through play offs to make sure they got 4th.

You can see why the teams lower down think its a good idea as it gives them a bite at the apple but then again they should concentrate on performing better over the whole season to secure 4th.

The way I see it, it gives Spurs, Villa and City a chance of CL football.

But they will probably crash out at the group stage, which is crap for the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool who would have qualified (quite rightly) for that place anyway.

Having said that, it gives Arsenal and Liverpool more incentive to do well, buy some decent players and stop relying on youth and Spanish players who clearly aren't what is need for the clubs to be successful.

I think it is 'good' and bad, but works in loops.

Currently one of the reasons we have 4 places in the CL is because of our success. For the last few years we have had many teams in the final rounds.
If we had this play off thing then we may well end up with lesser i.e. 7th place teams into the CL. The probably outcome would be they would get knocked out early (why you might say - well these same clubs currently get into the europa league any mostly fail against clubs of a much lower standard of the CL) ...this then puts the 4th place at risk and we may end up loosing it.

But it might help increase the merits of the other euro cups as you may see top teams such as Arsenal/Liverpool etc playing it it.

What about Euro/WC years, everyone already moans about the season going on too long, prolonging it even more with playoff games would make people even more tired coming up to major championships.

On the other hand, would give us another excuse for fucking up

TBH Rooney will be playing in Spain from next year so isnt going to effect him. Arsenal havent got any English players of note so they are OK. And we'll be in 3rd anyway so Gerrard will be fine.
