Unless it has a ten litre V8 and does 220 mph, i'd say you have the mother of all fuel leaks there Graham.

Does the car not reek of fuel?

I take it that it's just a normal, everyday hatchback sort of car yes?

No not quite, 2.3 Turbo, 256bhp, and a driver with a heavy right foot

It's not a fuel leak, just a damn thirsty car on boost.

Lowest i've had is 5.3mpg.

Average over about 1000 miles is 20mpg.

Car reeks of petrol on start-up. I think it just gets thrown straight out the back!

You dont know you're born

I picked up the ZT from the south of birmingham and drove it back to reading.. When I picked it up the fuel light was on and before I left I brimmed it which cost just over £60.. After the 103 miles journey I was on the last marker on the fuel gauge before the light comes on

I then drove to work and back for 5 days (35-40mile round-trip), filling up when required which ended up costing me well over £100 in fuel.

I hurt

I worked out it would cost me nearly £400 a month in fuel if I used it every day for work and had a play on weekends which more than pays for my second car (which does 60mpg) including tax and insurance!

I seem to get 30mpg in mine regardless of whether I rev the tits off it or drive like a granny, not that bad in comparison but for a 1.4 surely that's shit

about 270 can never get more than 270 out of a tank before the red comes on - so I'd guess theres what about 30miles in reserve? I've gone into proper granny driving mode this week, determined to beat it, 249miles so far and just gone below the last marker before the red

I think you just reset the MPG and let it idle for a few minutes and thats the lowest the computer goes
