Been looking at these along with CTR's but i was just wondering if anyone on here has had first hand experience with these? Running costs, reliability, easy to fix myself, what to look out for etc...
Any info would be good

I own a GSi and have so for the last month,
Been ubber reliable in that period only thing to happen is it blew a boost hose off due to a dodgy clip.
Not too bad on petrol driving normally, can drink very fast on full boost.

I do have quite a heavy foot tbh
What car did you have before hand?
I think im going to have to find some friends of friends to let me have a go in both to compare.
Trouble is Astra gsi £5000 - £6000 or ctr £6000 - £9000. Im slowly being pushed towards a ctr by most people.

There is a fair few people on here now with these
Just a few things to look for when buying one, the one I looked at before my current had rust around the rear arches, so make sure if you look at any that they are ok.
Make sure cambelt and waterpump have both been done along with usual maitenance etc.
Alot of people have the Turbo go at around 50k miles, Im on 69k on the standard turbo and still going strong luckily, but would be ideal if someone had already fitted the VXR unit.
There is a list on AON on what to look for when buying as Im sure Ive missed alot.
Running costs varies on how you drive, I do alot of around town driving and get around 26mpg, if Im flooring it alot i get around 17mpg.
Had mine since September last year and hasn't let me down yet, I also chose to service it myself and was all nice and easy
Lots of optional extra's available from model to model, climate control, built in sat nav, full leather etc.
A mate also has a CTR, I do really like these aswell, handles better than the Astra, doesn't use as much petrol and sounds really good with some form of induction kit.
Theres a good few members with Gsi's and CTR's on here who own and have owned them so you should get a few more responsies

If your worried about a heavy right don't, you don't need to work the half as much, if you rag it all the time you will lose your licence

astra is cheaper to chip up to the eye balls. Dont have to drive it like a twat at 14000rpm either.

Agreed, Although having owned a GSi myself I think the CTR is a much better all round car.
I found my GSi was wallowly even when lowered, Thirsty all the time and generally a uninspiring drive. The car just lacked any character IMO
It however did look good

Ive had my astra for a year and one day now. Loved it from the begining! Always wanted one. Im not bothered about handling or performance really, i just like it to be fast when it needs to be. I use vpower or tesco super in and always get above 30mpg. My turbo got replaced at 40k by previous owner but they can go well into the mid 70k. Ive done exhaust mods and thats as far as im going with it, never had a mechanical problem so far.

Thanks for every ones comments.
I dont drive like a twat tbh, i do alot of miles on the motorway so need a comfy ride but also want something that handles. Seems like i may go towards the civic tbf.
I have always had a small car so would rather go for something a bit bigger so civic is an ideal size. I think a clio would be ok but then its still a small car. Was looking for some good honest info on both cars.
So the astra is ok but doesnt handle well, drinks fuel and is a bit boring.
The civic is good all round but has no torque and you lot would pick on me because of it

Whats insurance like for you as the gsi will be a fair bit cheaper
Ive driven both back to back and prefered the civic which I ended up going for. But thats my opinion. As said get on autotrader and find one of each to drive

Theres a lovely cosmic grey one with full leather and everything i want but its nearer 9k
Going ring up my insurance and find out.
Only a £100 a month for a 12k corsa arctic vxr 212bhp, done yearly will be alot less so can see it being much higher..... i hope

Does it have to be a facelift one? As the pre facelifts are where most of the bargins hide
I actually prefer these now after having a facelift one
For me they came out at £100 a year cheaper to insure the a gsi
