seen a limited edition Boardman in white for a grand, kit looks good....what would you go for? need an 18 inch frame, front shocks with lock out. Not fussed on rest of spec so long as its good on road and can take a bit of offroad trails

cheers

Gav is right there. you're gonna be spoilt for choice and tbh they will all be very similar. i reckon you will have to draw up a shortlist and then go sit on them to see what feels best for you.

make sure you get some pics posted when you've got it though. i'm well jelous. i'm due an upgrade but with holiday season approaching i just cant afford it.

Specialized Rockhopper pro http://www.formbycycles.co.uk/product/6483/Specialized_Rockhopper_SL_Pro_Mountain_Bike_2010

XT Rear mech, elixir 4's, rock shox reba forks. What more could you want?

Could go for a Giant XTC 2 or XTC 29er.

If you can push to it maybe a Lapierre http://www.formbycycles.co.uk/product/6879/Lapierre_Pro_Race_200_Mountain_Bike_2010

Infact! I Dont know why i didnt think of this a minute ago. But if you want THE best bike for you're money. Quite honestly there isnt much better than the Whyte 901 Trail

http://www.formbycycles.co.uk/product/6930/Whyte_901_Trail

Has exactly what you are looking for, its made by Whyte (if you dont know who they are take a look at the other bikes they do http://www.formbycycles.co.uk/brand/89/Whyte ) Its honestly the best frame you will get for a hardtail around £1000

They are out of stock but are due in to ATB on the 23rd, but i have got to say they are well worth the wait. Go check out reviews for it http://www.whytebikes.com/2010/901.html#specs there at the bottom of there

Agree with Orange guys. I got an Orange G3 a few months back, and I love it. My budget was a couple of hundred less than yours!

Orange hardtail FTW.

Boardman is epic for the money, the kit outshines that of any other bike in its price range. I work part time in bikehut and we had one of the limited editions in. it looks great in the flesh and from working on them i can tell you they are built to last.

I'd probably go for the Spesh if buying new. Always make nice bikes and are a good spec for the money. Usually look good too which is a bonus.

Some of the lads (and lass) I go riding with have a a Whyte 905, Giant XTC 2 with XTR parts and an Orange P7. They rate them, I haven't had a go on them though.

The Orange looks a bit strange but its just cos the tubes aren't as big. I dont think you can go wrong really around that price, you'll end up with a good bike

Be really good if you can actually try some demo bikes off rode before you buy. Help you to get a better feel of what you like and dont like. Not sure if there is anywhere near you that has demo days, worth looking in to.

You can pay the extra if you want. You just have to ask you're bike shop.

I get people asking me this all the time. I have even done £1000 through the cycle scheme and another £1000 through finance for people. Aslong as the bike shop gets paid the full amount, they really dont mind what you want

Thing with specialized is you pay the premium for the name... as with giant, orange etc. The boardman bikes come with a not so well established brand name, but the kit they put on them is stuff you find on bikes twice the price from other premium brands.

Whatever though, if you are just using it to and from work, you could make do with a £700 banshee and still be happy.
