Quite fancy learning the guitar. Anyone on here play, is it hard to learn

If so, did you take lessons or you self taught? Bloke at work is self taught and he can play just about anything.

Something i've wanted to do for a while so any advice appreciated etc

i play

i took lessons from the age of 8 and went to music college for guitar. so about 10 years worth.

i'd recommend teaching yourself, though. lots of people do it and end up better than me.

Tis the joys of the internet, there's so many resources out there now which'll teach you how to play the guitar. The lessons section on ultimate-guitar.com is quite good for a start.

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/

Once you get a grasp of the basic techniques and how to read tabs (much easier than sheet music) then its just a case of practicing. Though lessons maybe useful later on if you decide you wanna get more advanced with your playing.

^^^^^ yeah.

this is what really changed it round for me. i'd been doing lessons and learning chords for years. then one summer i bought this sheet/tab music and sat down and learnt it, even the solos:

i came back to school and the guitar teacher was so impressed he decided to give me separate lessons from the other students.

I've been teaching myself for a couple of years. Although never really read much on how to play, just learned how to play some easy songs from tabs (Green Day is a good place to start if you like them as it's 99% powerchords) then gradually learned harder and harder things.

Have now forgotten a lot of the things I learned once though

I can play basic chords but I do find the finger work quite difficult personally and I just haven't got the patience to learn properly, greenday stuff is quite easy for beginners as dave said.

Love Oasis and looking around a lot of thier songs are fairly easy to learn so will probably start with them.

I've played for 9 years. After 5 years i took the plunge and decided to get some lessons. There was nothing that he could really teach me until we went into the theory side. Advantage of being self taught is you develop your own style and whats works best for yourself when learning a song. I learn through using tabs and ultimate guitar website is awesome!

One thing you need when learning guitar is patience and persistence.

Be prepared for sore finger tips too.

Start with basic chords like A, Em, and D or something. Trying some scales to strengthen your fingers too.

U2U if u want any help mate!

Try rage against the machine - killing in the name. Sounds cool and is surprisingly very easy.

I tried........

Well i didn't try as hard as i could TBH as i only picked it up maybe 3 times a week for an hour which isn't enough! I found using tab music very usefull and learnt some tunes that way.

The main problem i had was my fingers touching the strings i didn;t want to and it making it sound shit i had thick fingers though TBF.Remember though not everyone is cut out to play an instrument.Generally just frustrated me.
