Just got my renewal through meaning 2 years NCB which means i can now aford to insure my XE corsa.

Wanting to register it correctly with the DVLA but when looking at the leaflet along with my V5 it states that you need a headed letter from a garage stating that such changes to motor vehicle have actually been undertaken. So basically just a quick note saying that such and such a vehicle now has enigine such and such with the new engine number to corisponde with the V5 change.

Spoke to my local garage and hes happy enough to M.O.T it when its registered but won't produce me the letter to state the change, started stutering when i even mentioned the headed letter and didn't want anything to do with it in regards to sending anything away to the DVLA. said i woulld have to get the garage who did the change to produce the letter. This is a problem as i did the conversion myself.

Anyone else seem to find that no one wants anything to do with conversions!

Either a) make one up yourself
or b) find a friend

yes, you just fake the letter and send it to the DVLA. I managed to fax it to them and get it confirmed pretty quickly.

Most garages wont put their name to a DIY conversion because if the conversion is found to be dodgy, they don't want to get the blame!

I spoke to DVLA and explained I'd bought mine with the conversion already done so they were happy for me to stick a covering letter in saying this and it sailed through.

Bit different though for me.

So yeh, find a mate who works for a garage to do it or make one up I guess.

Aren't there issues with making one up.

Do you use an actually garage name or do you just make one up?

trying not to veer away from the legal side of things as i don't want to get shafted at a later date for anything that might manage to rear it's ugly head

I might of faked the name, address, and floor managers name on mine.

Never had any issues, its just a paperwork thing with the DVLA.

The DVLA dont really care when it comes to engine transplants, if they really care they will call you up for an inspection before they change it.

Write a hand written receipt for the engine.

They are only really give a shit when you are going to a smaller engine size and a lower tax bracket.

I thought that was the case, always remember you recommending an insurance company for them being "mod-friendly"

I bought my Corsa xe still registered as a 1.2 but I filled out the log book with an engine change at the same time as putting the car in my name with no paperwork

when I received the Log book it had been correctly updated to 1998cc with no issues.

I hope he asks for permission, So if/when the engine falls out and the police ask for the garage that fit it, your mate looses his job for theft of the company's stamp and fraud also...

Nice friend

Bit harsh? He's trying to do the right thing because the garage won't and you're shooting him down

Just looking at it from the other angle... Not putting him down but saying it straight. Their is a reason why the garages wont put their name against it - They didn't get paid to do the work.

Nope, but (presuming his mate is robbing the stamp for the night) use without the owners permission.
