My mates just got one and im pretty impressed with it, looking at gettin one as im new to photography and they seem to go for good prices,

They're what's known as a "bridge" camera as it kind of "bridges" the gap between a compact camera and D-SLR. It's basically the best of both worlds. My dad has a Fuji bridge camera (not that one but an older one) and it seems pretty good and he likes it, it does take some good photos I will admit. You get a lot more settings than most normal compact cameras so you can kind of get used to playing with the camera and seeing how things work and maybe get a D-SLR in the future if you want a bit more flexibility and better quality.

i want and D-SLR but i dont know if i can justify £400 on a 1st camera, to only then start buyin lenses

Bridge cameras are good but i outgrew mine in about 3 months and moved onto a 1000d which lasted me a year now im on to a 50d.
imo if you intend to get into it properly by that i mean for it to be a hobby not just there if you know what i mean then i would skip the bridge camera otherwise it is money spent you could of put towards a beginner dslr or higher.
as dave said you can get some cracking shots from bridge cameras and even some top of the range point and shoot cameras if you have an eye for photos but imo if you intend to start doing it more frequently then like i say go balls deep and get a dslr  hope that helps

DSLRs are money pits. I paid £380 for my Nikon D40 with kit lens 2 years ago and now everything adds up to more than 2k.

and the worst of both worlds. Its an awequard shape so not that great for taking out on nights out etc the same as a D-SLR, but without the advantage of swapping lenses. Everyone i know either swaps it after a few months for a D-SLR or never bothers with it cos they cant be arsed.
Personally i wouldn't bother, just get a proper D-SLR. If you cant afford one right now, save up.

Very good point Adam. If you were serious enough then tbh I'd say get a D-SLR straight out. I purposefully bought a compact camera that's 17mm deep so it can go in my pocket for gigs etc
