10w40 semi sythetic... Normally about 10 quid from most motorfactors.

Good enough for any car in this country.

They only recommend the expensive 0w30/5w30 fully synthetic oils because that is what they used to meet the emissions regs so thats what they have to recommend.

+ 1 for chip shop oil here too.

It's the cheapest alternative, as long as you don't mind the occasional smell and cravings for fish and chips.

Won't it need Fully synthetic in yours? I know all the Vauxhalls are supposed to have fully synthetic low ash bollocks for the DPF.

if youve got a derv youl need the right oil to take care of your diesel pump, is it really worth skimping on oil to fork out for another diesel pump when it knackers?

halfords oil is made by Comma, and isn't bad stuff. tbh, i wouldnt be leaving any oil in for 18k though! if you are gonna spend the £50 on the oil, get Millers stuff...pretty much the best oil you can get imho.

The only difference between diesel oil and normal oil is the level of detergent.. the diesel its self lubricates the diesel pump thats why they fuck up if you put petrol through them.

Depends on the car tbh, I'd get cheap oil for my van but I wouldn't on my car. I used the Halfords stuff in my Fiesta and it was fine in the year I had it

I personally wouldnt skimp on oil, after all thats what keeps your engine running.

I use millers stuff 5w30 full synthetic. Costs me £40 for 5tlrs.

Thinner oil is used for two reasons:

1) Less effort is required for the crank lubs to turn through it so it increases engine effciency ever so slightly and thus reduces emissions.

2) Because less load is on the crank moving through the oil it can spin faster.

But thinner oils arent as good at keeping the engine components floating so they must be synthetic to prevent them from breaking down and losing viscosity.. You are actually "safer" running a thicker oil under normal conditions.
