Anything but the vauxhall 1.7td, possibly the worst engine ever.

It's massively underpowered and it can't be tuned at all.
It's got about 60bhp and no torque, which is useless for towing.

Not sure on the engine code, just know it's the vauxhall engine and not the isuzi.

The 1.7DTi will probably be the best, like what's found in the Corsa.
Not sure if they did 2.0DTi's.

z17dt engine like john says-avoid
z20dth were rare but awesome
y17dtl were again rare but better than earlier z17dt, and they still use izusu/denso management.

I've read about alot of the 1.7 MK4 Astra Vans having fuel pumps go so I'd be careful about that, read a few things on AON about it when I was looking for a Van.

its not always the fuel pumps, its the ecu's, they were common for a solder joint cracking due to engine vibrations, always seemed to be around the 60k mark. garages would fit new ecu at iver 500, or can get ecu resoldered in about 10 minutes.

The y20dth in my mk4 astra hatch has been solid for us for the last 2 years. 100bhp /140ftlb standard, can be mapped or boxed for a bit more poke.
