I am applying for a 1 week law placement in the Crown prosecution service and I need to write a covering letter. So could someone please give me some tips on how to write a covering letter?

Expand on bits of your CV that you think are more related to the job you're after.

And in general any information that makes you seem suited for the job.

hand write it, neatly of course. gives a more personal touch rather than a printed one you could have sent to twenty other companies.
