It's dammed impressive, I don't think people appreciate how tricky it must be to control the flow of oil & gas of something that is 1.5 KM below sea level!
The top kill is due for completion tomorrow anyway, and the relief well is already being drilled

about $400 million to BP. Final cost incalculable. Talking about 10 billion maybe.

Well, the vessel was $365m 10 years ago
Day rate of mid $400k x 35 days
$625m in response fees, 19,000 personnel used so far
Much more to come in compensation
BP have pledged $500m into the post spill research
that's before any of the lost oil is accounted for!

Thing is though, this isnt really BP's fault.
The Deepwater Horizon Semi was owned by Transocean, The falied BOP was built by Cameron and purchased for the rig by Transocean.
BP merely own the rights to the block on which they are drilling and the Macondo Reservoir.
Put it this way, if you rented a car from Hertz and a wheel fell off whose to blame?
Apparenty the total cost will exceed 1 billion USD with clean up. Thats not taking into account the law suits that will follow.
I think have BP have done pretty well in the clean up bearing in mind this has never happened at these depths (5000 ft). Top Kill is getting put in place this avo and if that fails they are firing all sorts of shit down the well (combinantion of golf balls and gravel I think).

The cost of the lost oil is fuck all compared to how much it's going to cost to clean up

They need that boy Red Adair, he was good at plugging breached wells/reserviors, he did the Alpha back in '88. Pity he kicked the bucket though...
Edit: actually he was only any use for the fires :doyle:

Guy who does the training courses at work has worked with him before. He's showed me photos hes taken from massive blow outs in Russia and all over the world, scary!
Apparently the BOP's are only partially closed, and if they were fully open the rate of oil coming out would be alot worse
Now at work, when pressure testing BOP's we also have to record the time taken for the rams to close, this is just since this happening and also at BP's request

i'm actually amazed at just how much oil is spilling out.
that, 24 hours a day for over a month is just crazy.
puts it into perspective just how much oil there is if that's not even significant.
