According to the main man archie who fixed it, the bushing on the gear linkage was only just hanging on

The bushing being the bit thats broken off sitting at the top of the picture

Some early very basic 1.2 8v's were 4 speeds

So why did the previous owner say he fitted a 4 speed when he didnt
