I originally watched Avatar at the Cinema in 3D and loved it.
Ok the story is nothing special, but the effects and 'feeling' watching it were great. Especially in the subtle 3D.
I knew several people who saw the film in 2D, because 3D was too expensive and some who said 'I'll wait for it to come out on DVD' ...
- Jeez... I can see why they are / will be disappointed. It's just not the same when not in 3D. Everything looks flat, the landscapes and heights just don't look breath taking any more.
I wonder how many people bought it on dvd / bluray to watch it for the first time and thought it was shit too.

The bluray is pretty impressive, not as good as 3D though and still not good enough to make up for the storyline.

I was extremly impressed with the effects on bluray. I didn't see it in 3D though so maybe it because i have nothing to compare it to.
And aye storyline is gash

Literally, from the first scene (where they're getting him out of cryogen - and everyone is floating about in the space ship) I knew it was going to be poor in 2d. You seen in 3d, that section had real depth and it felt like you were looking down from a real height ... the same 'Real' feeling you get when you look off the side of a high object.

Haven't watched it in any format; doesn't appeal to me at all, but several mates have said the same, that it's rubbish in 2D.

The 'popping out' bits like the ash were different...
Most of the film was in a type of 3d which gave a depth of field. Quite subtle, but basically made things in the foreground seem closer than things in the background.
This allowed (for instance) the feeling of real depth / distance when looking over the side of a cliff or off a tree. It was also noticable for simple things like the bloke sitting at his computer vlogging (the screen feeling very close, him seeming slightly further away (behind it) and the rest of the stuff in the room looking far away). This style was used through most of the scenes and was what imo made the film 'an experience' to watch.
Most people thought the '3D' in the Avatar 3D version would just be some stupid things popping out at the audience.

Paul you are absolutely spot on imo.
Had to be seen in 3D at the cinema, the 'experience' made up for the shortfalls in what is a very average movie.
I wont be rewatching it in 2D.

With the blu-ray there is still quite an impression of depth.

bluray 42" tv.
I just found it felt flat compared to having the 3d glasses on.
