Is it not just a higher octane which some engines require to run at their peak ?

i don't think so, and people tell me my car should be better on the higher RON fuel, but i think its people imagination.
am sure i've heard its more worth while on turbocharged engines

You use a fuel with a higher RON in high compression and turbocharged engines. the RON relates to the fuels resistance to burning under compression. For instance diesel is something like 20RON because it's meant to burn when compressed. If you put a low RON petrol in a turbocharged engine which was running high boost and a little lean for good measure you would risk detonation, where the fuel pre-ignites and explodes. This will destroy an engine in seconds.
There are probably no road-cars that come out the factory which really need the 98RON and 99RON stuff, no matter what the internet tells you.

My impreza had to have super unleaded else it would run like shite....very noticable lack in performance & horrendous back firing from the car.
M3's meant to run on it but can take normal unleaded fine with just a comprimise in performance.
More interestingly my 1991 Golf GTi said to use only super......it was a 8 valve 4cyl engine with 125bhp? ffs

I couldn't tell you the difference in my car as it has only been run on shell V-power since it came out of the factory. It is mapped now though so can't be run on the 95ron. Supposed to better for the engine and cleaner with more miles to the tank, but then they would say that to get you to buy it.
