Have narrowed it down to these two but I have no way of knowing if either of them have a tray for lava rocks above the gas.... don't suppose anyone has either of them?

Both links are for Argos, the first is the Sicily 3 Burner BBQ

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3450585/Trail/searchtext%3ESICILY+BBQ.htm

And the 2nd, Antony Worrall Thompson 'Masterchef' BBQ - I can pick one up for £80 on the bay.

http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500002201&langId=-1&searchTerms=ANTHONY+WARROLL+THOMPSON+BBQ#tabrev

Unless anyone can recommend an alternative, max budget £150 but ideally not as high as that. Needs to be gas, look fairly good and with the facility to use the fake coal shit.

Much appreciated

The Anthony Worral one is actually cheaper on ebay.

But does the one you have let you use lava rocks?

well i've looked at a few and some have no where to put them, others have a tray above the gas ignitors things to lay the fake coal on, then a tray above that to cook the food.

Some only have the tray to cook fod, I would presume that doesnt give very even cooking and only on the 2 spots where the flames are?

I may be wrong though..

So you would use real coal on a gas barbecue?

I wont even attend a barbecue unless it is cooked on lumpwood. Gas isn't having a barbecue, it's an upside down grill in the garden and requires no skill or ability. I hate them.

Can you not just enjoy eating outside without turning it in to a competition to prepare the food without technology?

Yes. Cook the food in the kitchen under a gas or electric cooker.
