I won that escort on ebay and need to collect it.

What are the proper ways of doing this? Get insurance for a day? car is about 5miles away from home.

Then i can't get tax without an MOT?

you can't tax it without MOT.

So insure it for the day, book an MOT at the station near your house, go to the car's location and drive it to the MOT station

"oh, officer, I'm taking it for a pre-booked MOT".

book an mot place near to your home
insure it for the day

if you get stopped you are taking it to the garage where it is booked in for an MOT

or hire a trailer

i mean seriously they tried to do this with the fiat i had, insurance went from £200 to £480 so i got rid of it

i was, but it seems ok now i've thought about it, its got alloys, spoiler, all electrics inside, 120bhp might be alright for bumming around in, i loved having the fiat when i didn't have to avoid all potholes and hedges etc

So for the sake of a tenner dayinsure.com it (you can print a cover note there and then!), book an MOT and if you get pulled over your legal saying your taking the car to be MOTd

They are really juicy though, 250 miles to 45 litres
