Right,
To cut a long story short, I’m changing my broadband package to bring the price down a bit, and the package I’m going to be moving on to doesn’t allow me to have a static I.P address (something that I’ve had for years on my current package, and got used to)
I connect to my home server (2003 R2) on more or less on a daily basis via the standard Remote Desktop Connection, using the static I.P address to set the route.
So, when I lose this I.P (which I will be), has anyone got any suggestions as to how I can continue with my remote access. I've done things with Dynamic DNS in the past, using a service called "no-ip" or something, but it was a bit shit.
Router is a Netgear DG834G if that helps.

I use logmein.com
Remote access is blocked at places where I work mostly, so I can use this in the browser no problem

Thanks for the reply, and its an option. However, ideally, i wanted to stick to using remote desktop connection.
But still, i think i'll give logmein a go.

I think the standard DG834G firmware does it, if not(and even if it does) get the firmware from http://dgteam.ilbello.com/ while you are at it.

I use DynDns and can't fault them. Worked perfectly for the last couple years.
Starting to use logmein as a backup with friends due to the ability to get around firewalls and routers

just hunt for a dynamic hostname provider (you get some subdomain.theirdomin.com, and you have a piece of software that runs on your pc that keeps the redirect on that subdomain updated with your ip), plenty of them about.

O2 will give you a static IP for about £20 a month which seems OK to me?

If your router / firewall does not support dyndns, there is a small app you can install on one of your servers that will update the records.

Is what i do and is spot on, even though your new ISP doesnt have a static IP you might find that you have a hostname that will always stay the same, most of the time its something like, johsmith06.myisp.co.uk tc...
