Gearbox is on its way out on my 20k mile Astra.. Phoning me back on Monday once Vauxhall have authorised it to be changed.

Thank god I'm still in warranty by 5 months or I'd be properly pissed off.

I really want one of the 1.9CDTi 150's but them sharing the same gearbox as the VXR and all the internet rumours is right putting me off, 20k even hard driving is ridiculous??

Your one of the lucky ones to still have a warranty.

I'm always suspicious with Internet horror stories (such as BMW vanos and txb Vx) but this really does seem shocking 3 people on Corsasport all affected?! Really bad.

Eck and kano's are tuned, daimo can't drive, people on astra forums are wierdos so you don't know the real story. It's really not as big a problem as forums make you believe.

I deleted the thread due to the amount of unreal bitching and childlike attitudes on it.

That's another 3 people on vxr online that have broken boxes.

The amount of threads on the same problems suggests otherwise

its always the same once a select few get onto a thread and think they are hilarious

tuned or not its a weakness that is certainly worrying if you are thinking of buying one out of warranty

All this shit about abuse breaking them is correct to a small degree but I gave my 106gti serious abuse over the year I had it and the supposedly chocolate box never let me down once. the box must have a serious design flaw to affect that many cars over such a small period of time.

That box and the standard diff have to tolerate some serious shit, uprate to a LSD and bearings and decent oil. Thing is I know lads who have 55 plate VXR's runng 300bhp all their lives with LSD and haven't had issues.

Internet tends to make the issue worse than it really is.

Its had its share of spirited driving but 99% of its use is by my other half just to her work and back.

Not too fussed, more annoyed that the subframe etc will all have to be dropped to get the box out.

Mines still driveable at the moment, just a very faint wheel bearing type noise. Interesting thing was the mechanics said its the first they've seen with a bearing gone. Internet maybe amplifies the problem a bit I think.

Torque kills boxes, a small French hatchback has none.

I know both a service manager and a vaux mechanic btw, not one that thinks a performance retarding mat is a real item, I don't just make stuff up, the Internet says it's more of a problem than it really is.

Its all bullshit!! Big Eck was tuned and he has no idea how that box was treated before he had it, same with Kano regardless of mileage!

I work at a VX main dealer and it is by no means a common fault, just internet rumours, Sadly, not every Astra owner is on astra or corsa forums etc so you will only see the bad. I'm sure there is a story like this on every forum!!

Regardless a Gearbox failure at 20k miles is ridiculous.

Im not implying that any of the three people on here haven't had the same problem, but in all the time I was searching about VXRs (and Astras in general) I never came across many gearbox threads.

Maybe coincidence that there's 3 posted on here in quick succession.....
