Since the Mazda is being sold, I will not longer have something to play with. With that in mind im considering selling the Golf and going back to having a hybrid, and possibly buying a second cheap runaround in the future. Il have about 3k to play with, give or take. First thoughts are Clio 172, either ph1 or a ph2 cup again. However, I am reluctant to go back FWD. With that in mind im also thinking an E30 325. Would anyone have any idea which could be potentially quicker out of the two? Or can anyone think of any other cars I should be considering?

i'd guess the 172 would be quicker on track due to having such a good chassis whereas the bmw is a bit of a barge.

if you can get 100% out of the RWD 325 it'll be quicker than a 172.
Talking bare bones trackcar here - decent susp, brakes, tyres - Not road going cars.
If it has to RWD what about an MR Turbo? Loads more potential for power compared to other cars mentioned.
E36 328 or M3 (how much are they now I have no idea)

You can get an e36 328 in my price range, would have assumed they are slower than an e30 325 though, just because I think the power is similiar and I was guessing they are heavier.
I think eventually whatever I buy will be an all out track car, even when I had my last 106, I didnt compromise for the road.

An E36 328, with a 325 inlet manifold will see over 200bhp.

For 3k you could probably pick up an E36 M3 with a few bodywork issues and still have some change.Infact, you'd probably get a decent E36 M3 for 3k.Theyv dropped alot in price now-adays.

Abit silly basing what car you buy on times cars get. It all comes down to driver IMO.

ya but its facting in the costs, the first one is cheap but soon as you want nice bits it can get expensive as you know. But then again its quite fun to have a project and ragg it on track in different states of modding. When I think back to how the astra was before the cage, seats, proper weight reduction happened is mental.
Have you considered just buying a ready made track shed off piston heads track section? theres the odd bargain in there.

I bought my E36 325 for £600 off ebay. Was a great car, pretty clean concidering. With some time and research, you could probably build one for cheaper than the cost of that one I posted. Handle amazingly well.

4500quid for an old E36 325 with a roll-cage and slightly better suspension.Not a hope in hell.
I wouldnt even call that a track orientated car tbh.

Yeah I know what you mean, ideally I do want to find a car with most stuff already done.
