So they have announced a few things from Apple TV, to redesigned Shuffles, Nanos and IPods;

Apple Airplay is about time too;

Its just a shame I cannot (yet) stream this to my AV reciever without having to use a 3rd party device, i.e my popcorn hour C200.

Comments?

A friend of mine was telling me rumours about that touch screen nano. I didn't quite get it at first, but it looks kinda funky...

Been wanting a B&W Zepplin for ages now too, this AirPlay stuff sounds good

All of it was known before hand, the nano looks good though.

Apple TV could possibly be good for the price depending on what formats it can realistically play, only 720p though which is a bit of a disappointment.

Airplay is something that can be done already with bluetooth, always good to be added for free though, I doubt the manufacturers of peripherals will be the same with pricing.

Oh, and Apple TV...

Get that, a DNLA TV or another device like a Popcorn Hour? I'm using Windows Media Centre at the moment and I don't like it one bit...

Unless Apple do the unthinkable and let it play formats other than the ones they like, popcorn hour et al will probably be a better bet imo.

Looking at the tech specs it will play H.264 with AAC-LC and MPEG-4 with AAC-LC video. So that's .m4v's .mp4's and .mov's in layman terms.

I didn't expect anymore than they allow currently, mkv's and avi's are still the majority of what you can get outside of official channels and that's the compatibility you need for it to take off.

The sort of rich people who wouldn't mind that it's crippled in what formats it can play will already have a TV that can play they formats and won't need an extra box.

I'm just interested to see how OS4.2 work on my iPad. Hoping a few little niggles get sorted out, and wireless printing will be ace.

H.264 is a very good codec though.

Indeed, I think anyone with a technical background wont be buying one of these.
Its a good price and offers a good service that will make apple alot more money, but they will never open it up to play avi's and MKV's.

Who knows, they're may even be hacks eventually released.

With that in mind, the popcorn hour popbox is a much better alternative for a cheap media player for someone who downloads most of their content.

That it is, it's the same codec when it's wrapped in an mkv container though that apple devices could quite happily play.

New iPod Touch looks good - gonna get myself one I think

Vaguely related question then, I have a year old BOSE iPod Portable SoundDock - how do I know for sure that it will work with the new Touch?

Apple TV will be very good for the price, they restricted to 720 to cut download times its an equal balance IMO.

http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=XBMC_for_Mac_on_Apple_TV

As they've removed the internal hard drive as well as used new hardware, the overall design of the new ATV is tiny. Once it's hacked to install XBMC or Boxee, it'll be a valid replacement for WDTV and the likes - especially at £99

That's a terrible attempt at an excuse.

Why not support 1080p output and offer 720p dowloads if that was the reason.

I think the quality of 720 is fine myself, and eitherway Im sure it will still sell well and the geeks wont buy it as they want every format under the sun and will buy there own, while the masses will just buy apple tv as it will work out of the box.

I've said it before, but a lot of people just don't care.

I don't care that my iPad 'only' has 256mb of RAM - it really makes bugger all real-world difference for how I use the thing. Same with Apple TV. If it works, its cheap enough with decent content and the picture looks good enough they'll sell.

I don't even know what type of HD my PS3 puts out. It looks way better than standard definition so I forget all about it, job done.

I know a lot of people don't care and that's fine.

Using that as an excuse for them leaving yet another feature out of yet another product isn't though.

I've said before, Apple don't restric this stuff because the hardware isn't capable of it, they do it because they can, next years will undoubtedly have 1080p so you then need to go out and buy that one.

Upgrading products is fine, holding back major features then releasing them exactly a year later just isn't cricket.

No one NEEDS to buy it though, they choose to. Apple have got the demand behind them to pull it off, can't blame them for it.

When it has 1080p all the people who didn't need it this year will suddenly find a requirement for it though.

I need to stop coming in these threads
