Ive just imported some items for my online business from China and they are clearing customs now. I am expecting to be charged by customs as its quite a large amount of stock.
Does anyone have any idea how long it takes for them to send a letter telling you what you have to pay them?

its normally done by the courier on delivery
i have just paid £672 import charges on a watch which was made payable to fedex on delivery

Are you bringing them through via a courier like UPS?
If so then normally they'll be charged and wont deliver the goods unless you pay (at least thats how it worked for me last time). Other times they may expect payment before they even clear the items.

Cheers Guys if they dont ask for payment should i expect not to be paying charges then? They did say that they would value the packages very low to save me any fees

They'll just send you a bill through if they dont ask when they deliver it.
You'll have fees, duty and VAT all due on the items.

depends on value and catergory of items to be honest
I have had quite a bit through from US and china in the past with no charges
You can pay by card on delivery or they will not leave the items with you and you will have to call the courier to arrange payment and scheduled delivery

Parcelforce will pay customs for the duties and VAT and then send you a letter once it is back at the local depot asking you to pay the charges before delivery. They will also charge you £13.50 for the use of their customs deferment account, i.e. paying the charge to customs for you.

Normally get the letter the day after they get it in their warehouse. Either pay on card and they will deliver next day (supposedly) or just go in with invoice and ID and pay that way.
There is always VAT added, but there is a lower limit for duty. Its its under a certian amount it is not charged.

For next time, get them to send it in a box labeled 'Samples' don't have to pay duty according to some guy i was queuing with at the ParcelForce depot.
Either that or ask them to tell them its only worth £100, then you wont have any duty to pay 
Your just fucked if it gets lost/damaged etc

For high value goods it is not worththe risk of the seller doing this as its fraud

While that works some times if customs inspect it and feel a higher value needs to be on it then they will charge you for it. If it gets lost or damaged anyway your fucked unless it's insured.

Whenever I've had stuff from UPS from China, the goods get delivered then they invoice you the charges after.

ParcelForce will send you a letter in the post detailing the charges and once you've paid they'll deliver it to you.
Any goods over £18 in value you will have to pay any duty and/or VAT. Marking items as samples does NOT get you around this, nor does getting the sender to mark it as a gift - trust me I know this, I used to work for DHL and they (courier companies AND customs) know all of these "loopholes"!
