Its programmed into the ECU at a certain amount of miles that it is due for a service, it wont go off until it is turned off after a service.

Nope, oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter, plugs, leads, pads, check the discs for excessive wear, the garage basically checks everything and replaces if nessacery. So if you dont know what your doing then take it to a garage unless you just do a basic service which is what I stated above. Although the light wont go off unless you take it to a garage. The car has to be told its been serviced

-put key in ignition (but dont turn it yet),
-hold the milage reset button and turn the key untill the ignition lights come on but DO NOT start the car,
-keep holding the milage reset button untill INSP goes off.
-turn ignition off once INSP has gone off and remove the key.
-put key back in and turn ignition on again and INSP should be reset.

then carry on an do a service no need to spend silly money getting the light turned off when you can do it for free.

All it is is on the ECU the dealers have set the service light to come on at 12,000 mile intervals and the ecu has noticed that it was 12,000 miles since the last time the light was reset.
