We were having a debate last night and the general conclusion was that Unions have no place in the modern day and age - discuss

They have a place, but they should realise that their place is not protecting jobs or demanding silly wage increases that could put the company in danger or threaten the economy - as theyre currently doing.

They're generally all cunts IMO
I work on a couple of government contracts one of which is running at 45% efficiency of staff. If they got rid of people to bring themselves up to just 75% it would save tax payers over £6m a year yet the unions are asking them to strike due to not getting a payrise

That fat idiot who runs the RMT is the definition of a work union. Useless waste of space.

They work in theory as a collective voice, in practice not so much.

Id say all jobs need (well not need but can use) a Union as it can be a good place to contact should you not be being treated how you should (i.e. when it comes to sick, holidays, general problems, etc.)

They shouldnt have the powers to walk out demanding silly pay rises during times of economic hardship.

Agreed with the OP.

Union Reps in workplaces used to have a lot of clout, but in my experience working in a large (engineering) company under Unite they couldn't give a fuck about what the workers wanted.

I got given a formal warning for being late for college - but two others that were just as late as me ended up just getting away with it. I told my union guy that I wanted to appeal it and he just told me to leave itand get my head down. I took his advice thinking it was quite appropriate. Cue me getting laid off my job at the end of my apprenticeship due to having this warning on record, even after keeping my nose clean for the remainder.

Obviously that's just my experience, but even when it came down to wage rises and working conditions - the union just wanted us to agree with the bosses without even putting up a fight. Total arseholes just doing it for a wee bit of time off work.

Try Police Federation then - £18 a month, no right to strike, loads of things we cannot do, yet Fire Service, NHS etc can. Teachers get 12+ wks holiday per yr, more pay than me, no weekends, Bank holidays, nights etc. Not a hard life in comparison. I made my choice to join, yet get screwed over royally in comparison with other jobs.

I've found that the Unions at where i've worked and currently work are all stuck in the 80's, going on about Thatcher this Thatcher that. They're also as bad as company management in terms of keeping things to them selves and dictating things to you.
