Pretty cool, but nothing new. Was a IT guy up north than did it with a 'point-and-shoot' camera, was a few years ago in The Sun/Mirror etc.

Ed - What were you thinking of using the GSM modem for? Bit slow to transmit photos/video (that's if you could get a signal at 90,000 ft).

When it hits the ground it can send a few text messages saying where it is. Was thinking that those Flip video cameras are pretty tough, no idea if they're tough enough though...

Potentially use something like an Arduino/Seediuno board with a number of external sensors/modules (GPS etc), get it to data log the flight and interface the GSM modem for GPS texts. It certainly would be an interesting project.
I think the Flip would be fine, but I think you'd still need to heat the whole compartment.

Some Spanish teenagers had a go as well although I think they only got stills not video.

I'm surprised it only travels a few miles away. I would have expected hundreds.

It's not really a spacecraft made using an iPhone, it's a bunch of balloons with an iPhone in a box attached isn't it? I was expecting there to be an app for controlling mini rocket boosters or something.

Sorry Mr. Techno, fair enough it's a 'spacecraft' in the literal sense of the word. Ask anyone on the street to draw a spacecraft, however, and I'd bet my foreskin the majority of them would draw a space shuttle or rocket shaped object. Not a bunch of balloons anyway.
