First off do we have any Commercial Pilots on here or does anybody know any?

One of my FB contacts is currently undergoing all the training, no idea how he has funded it as he has spent the last 8 years or so travelling/drifting all over the world and occasionally working as a labourer/construction worker. I dont think he has received a huge cash injection, (not that its my business) but i thought to finance this you were talking 50k+

So what is the route into this? You just finance and go through all the flight training and providing you pass that and medicals etc etc you can go for a job as a commercial pilot?

Not something I am wanting to do, just curious and thought I would see if anyone is on the know in here before I go sifting through web articles.

Thanks.

It is VERY expensive to do this, and the normal (but extremely difficult) way of doing this is doing it through an airline that may pay part or all of the costs.

In any case, you have to start off with getting a private pilot's license and with training and having a minimum amount of flying hours that in itself is a few grand as well.

I was going to do it, but then boom, recession and no jobs.

There are two routes really, Integrated and Modular. On an integrated course you complete the whole thing in about a year to 18 months. In that time you gain your CPL, Instrument Rating, get your ATPL theoretical knowledge exams out of the way and complete your Multi Crew Cooperation course. After that you get what's known as a Frozen ATPL which let's you fly right seat for money (First Officer). Sadly you'll be in about £50k's worth of debt unless you have a different way of funding it, that used to be OK because you could go fly jets for someone and earn about £60k a year on your first job. Now it seems that you'd be lucky if you got a job flying turboprops for £20k a year - not good when your loan repayments are £1.5k a month.

You can go modular which is where you do the same course, only you pay for it as and when you can do it in modules. You need to complete all of your theoretical ATPL stuff within a year through an authorised ground school. The problem with doing this is maintaining your currency, you need to use you Instrument Rating for x hours every x months and the same goes for your CPL. You also have to get your PPL first, then go flying about for 100 hours before you can do you CPL, though I think if you do a proper CPL module then you just include IR training in those 100 hours.

Then after you've spent all that money, you still can't get a job

I know one of the guys I went to uni went down this route and got a £50k career loan. I don't think it's an amount you worry about when you are certified, very quickly go up a steep pay scale

(To be able to fly left seat you need to have ATPL exams, CPL, Instrument Rating and Multi Crew Cooperation and flow 1500 hours)

A few airlines in Australia now offer cadetships locally. This costs between $75k and $85k aussie dollars - but you pay back the airline over a period of 5 years that you work for them.

It is something I am seriously considering, as I am not getting any younger and I am still a good candidate for selection.

One of my friends younger brother has done this. He went to a Uni in London for a year, and somehow got hand picked by an American Company who have him now living out there and are paying for everything. Cunt
