Got a gland in my neck that has been swollen for a while, even after 2 weeks worth of antibiotics. It happened a while back, and after tablets it went back down. It hasn't gone down this time, and i've got to go to Royal Free in London for them to look at it on Tuesday...

Question is, has anybody ever had one removed? Is it painful or something you dont feel, and how quickly is the recovery process, did you have any time off work...?

I've got a rare medical condition, and go for annual check ups down there.
Anything I ever have done, biopsies etc I have in the Royal Free.

Yeah, its a good hospital. Quite often end up in A&E looking after people that should know better

The only thing that lets it down is the receptionist staff, they are awful. The whole organization of appointments etc is terrible there.

They send me an appointment reminder for July 2009 a few weeks ago.

I have mate, I had a lymph node removed from my neck. Its the lower of the Superior Cervical glands in this picture:

It was inflamed for months and a bit painful so they took it out, biopsied it and found nothing. Stupidly when I had it removed they gave me the option of local or general anaesthetic I said local and regretted it, at one point I felt like ice had been poured over me on the operating table and the alarms all went off as I went into shock but they sorted me out. It was a horrible operation to have with just a local and I wouldnt recommend it.

I had a couple of weeks off work, it healed up perfect, wouldnt even know I'd had an op there now, the scar is about 40mm long when you really look for it.

I had a cleft something or other in my neck a couple of years back and had to have an operation to cut it out. Took me about 48 hours to get over the general anaesthetic but other than that never a problem.

I had a biopsy last year, and they found nothing from it either mate.

Thanks for the info Ben, its more than likely going to be moved. Looking at the diagram, it's the same one as you.

Actually, that's exactly where mine was as well - same length scar. Think they slightly damaged a nerve in my neck too, still ever so slightly numb skin at the back of my jaw.

They warned about potential damage to nerves, at one point they pinched a nerve in my neck and it was like someone had gripped the tip of my tongue with a pair of pliers, really weird!

Its not bad by any means, but if I touch the back of the left of my jaw it feels normal, right not quite right.

Not like I've ended up a dribbler though, don't worry

Old Bill, we take the drunks there and all the locals after they've upset the wrong person and managed to get themselves shot

In fairness, it is in a nice area, its just the people that end up there aren't. Its either there or the UCH that they end up in, depending on who is driving and how close to teatime it is

Whilst I know its a different kind of gland, my mate had a sweat gland removed from his jaw line after it clogged and swole up to golfball size.

Didnt require any time off work for it, did leave quite a scar though.
