How long do you think they'd last?

I'm sure my rear(s) have gone again, but they were replaced probably less than 6k ago
Plus they don't whine going round a corner, only at speeds above 60 in a straight line so could this still be the bearings!?

iirc over tightening them or undertightening them drastically reduces there lifespan

With a 3ft breaker bar aye?

Mine went the other day on the passenger side, only realised when I backed up to hang up the exhaust and the wheel was rubbing on the arch. It was that bad that when I jacked the thing up the wheel had about an inch of play in it, with the wheel bolts tightened up Upon inspection I found out that the outer side tapered roller bearing had siezed and pretty much exploded into many parts, fucking the bit of the stub that the inner race sits on. The only things left were the outer and innner races and there were a few bits of cage and rollers kicking about.

There had been next to no symptoms apart from a slight squeaking between 30-50mph for the last week or so, so I was planning on looking at it when the weather dries out a bit. Just before I realised it was fucked I was coming up the motorway so I'm glad I actually got the thing up the road, could have been much more dodgy. Headed to the scrappy and got a whole new rear hub since I needed the shoes and cylinders on both sides replaced, opened it up when I got home to find that it looks almost brand new so happy days. Might go get the other one next week.

Not really tbh, I fitted a pattern cambelt kit to my old mk3 astra and it was fine. Fitted a pattern track rod end on the corsa 2 years ago now and it's still going fine, same with a bottom ball joint. I'd rather pay half the price from a motor factors than get shafted by the dealers - you'll find that most independant garages do this as well unless it's a specialist part. So if professional mechanics do it there can't be much wrong with it?

Yep, one of my fronts was replaced at about 130k, and I did both rears at about 140k with new drums as well. I guess the rears were changed before that though!

Hmm, god knows then. Mine were greased up and tightened to that specified. Guess ill just have to replace them again

Saying that, they seemed to die after a prolonged motorway journey at 90-100 monkeys an hour to make up a 30 mile miscalculation could that have killed them?

i disagree

some are, some aren't

depends on the part, the original manufacturer and who ever makes the pattern
