Reet, I thought I would start a thread in here to pick the brains of any CS Geeks.
I am also researching online and the Netgear NAS community forums.
Connected up NAS box the other night and its absolutely as slow as shite, write speeds are only like 400k a minute and if i try to play an MP3 through media player on my laptop it takes about 30 seconds before it starts streaming then it suffers from pauses etc.
As soon as I pointed itunes to a music folder on the NAS box the application just locks up.
NAS box is connected via ethernet to a Netgear ADSL 54mbps 802.11b/g router.
Accessing the NAS Box via a brand new R730 Samsung laptop running windows 7.
I have set the MTU on the NAS box at 1500 and 1430 on my laptop which speeded things up marginally and prevented write errors.
Any ideas for further troubleshooting? I will continue to sift through the Netgear forums but would welcome any suggestions?
Im pretty sure the wireless adapter in my laptop is wireless N so contemplating buying a wireless N router which would give me 100meg wireless instead of 54? but surley it should not be this piss slow using the G protocol?

Try it via an actual patch cable to rule out the wireless card.
How new is the NAS box?

The NAS box is brand new : http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143121
So connect my laptop to router via an ethernet cable an see what the access/write speeds are like then?

Any suggestions for how to approach this? ie software to conduct tests etc? I have never really pulled large amounts of data over this wireless network before to be honest.
Netgear router has latest Firmware as well.
Software updates for NAS etc applied too.

Yeah, disable the wireless and plug the laptop into the router.

Ok cheers for input but thats a bit of a no shit sherlock troubleshooting task really. (on both our accounts)
I expect via ethernet its going to be quick and that will rule out any issues with the NAS. Hence my wireless network is shite, but question will be why is it shite?

Have you tried to ping the NAS box and the router from your laptop - what ms response rate do you get?
Should be fine over plain old G for what you are doing!
Edit: try what this guy suggests: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=226

PS I recently bought a Netgear DGN1000 (wireless N) and I think it's probably the best damn router I've ever had (and I wasn't a fan of Netgear routers in the past due to having some crap ones previously).

I had a Netgear WGT router and it too use to suffer with shite transfer speeds (not as bad as yours, 900kb/s ish) between wireless and the routers Nics, never did find a solution or reason to the bottleneck. But replaced it with a Linksys and i now get a solid 2-4MB/s between my laptop and my wired devices.

Cheers Sam, Might go for a wireless N router anyway, perhaps time to upgrade.

Might be worth patching straight to the NAS box and see what the max throughput is though, you should see 10-20MB/s+ on a Gb link, as it'll show if the NAS box is goosed. Likewise you could do the same and patch it through the router, will tell you if there is issues with the routers switch.

Ok am connected to the router from my laptop via an ethernet cable.
I can now copy data from the NAS at around 9mbs
However if I try and write data to the NAS its only around 100kps
WTF is going on

reset all your MTU settings back to default.
Also, does the NAS have the latest firmware installed?

What about connecting straight to the NAS box via ethernet? Seems a little odd that writing is an issue

MTU for LAN Connection was never changed it is still 1500 the same as the NAS.
Wirless connection is set to 1430.
NAS is running the latest firmware.

You followed the instructions in that link I posted up?
If so, your router is probably fucked
